Polyethylene waxes have very complex molecular structures containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The architecture of the molecules depends on synthesis method.
Polyethylene waxes are extremely complex, and every product performs differently. The oxidized grades tend to promote fusion and moderate melt temperatures. RX-216 is a stronger fusion promoter than RX-215. The non-oxidized grades, which have acid numbers close to zero, delay fusion and have a tendency to exude from the melt and coat machinery surfaces.
Each product is clear and bright when melted to a liquid. RX-215 is approved as an NSF generic ingredient and is listed in the PPI PVC Pipe Range Composition for PVC potable water pipe. These waxes are building blocks for our lubricant systems.
Polyethylene waxes can also be made by a variety of methods including direct synthesis, degradation from high molecular weight polymers, and various reclaim strategies.
